Bud and Lou are Harley Quinn's beloved hyenas, often seen as her loyal companions and pets. They debuted in 1993, quickly becoming integral to Harley's character. Named after the comedy duo Abbott and Costello, their playful, albeit dangerous, antics provide both comic relief and a demonstration of Harley's chaotic nature.

Originally obtained from the Gotham City Zoo (or sometimes rescued from other dire situations), Bud and Lou are fiercely protective of Harley, often attacking her enemies with vicious enthusiasm. While portrayed as wild animals, they exhibit a surprising level of understanding and loyalty to their owner. They have also been depicted as able to understand certain commands, or at least recognize specific targets.

The hyenas represent a softer side to Harley Quinn's otherwise unpredictable and volatile personality. Their presence emphasizes her detachment from conventional societal norms and her embrace of a more animalistic, untamed lifestyle. They serve as a reminder that even amidst the madness, Harley Quinn is capable of forming meaningful bonds, albeit with creatures that are just as eccentric as she is.
